Manor houses

A manor is a knight’s hall among the villages he holds. There is one for every two or three of a castle’s villages, at least 0.5 km from any other place. It stands within a day’s march of each of its villages and two days’ ride of its castle.

A manor house.

Plan What it is
Yard A palisaded farmyard
Court A stone-walled court
Tower house A tower in a small walled yard
Open A hall-farm with no wall

Tower houses are most common in hills, mountains, snow and tundra. Knights of three or more villages mostly build courts.

Every manor has its hall, a well and a dovecote in its yard, and a mill and fishpond nearby. Behind the hall are a walled garden and an orchard, with two small fields of its own. Some walled manors have a moat, and some hang timber hoardings over their gates.

The knight owes the castle above him and leads his manor’s levies and a retinue of 8. The hall’s door opens the manor’s Jobs and Heads tabs. A village with no manor owes its castle directly if it lies within a day’s march, or no one if not.
