Pollards

A great pollarded oak over the commons.

An old oak that is cut back again and again just over head height. It grows a squat bole topped by a knobbly head, with a fan of straight poles rising from it into a wide crown. A pollard stands about 13.5 m tall and its crown reaches about 15 m across.

Pollards stand wide apart over each place’s commons, the wood pasture where the herds graze. They are planted and never grow wild.

They leaf, turn and stand bare like the other oaks.
