Green trees

The big old tree on a village green.

Each village green has one big old tree, standing clear of the maypole’s dance, the stocks and the pound. It is an oak or an elm, whichever grows in that part of the disc. Two to four benches stand under it or by the pond.

It leafs, turns and stands bare like the other broad-leaved trees.

Its trunk stops men and horses.
