Hay and pasture

The village meadows lie by the streams and water past the great fields, two or more to a village.
| Meadow | What it is |
|---|---|
| Hay meadow (six in ten) | Open, mown in early summer and the hay piled in haycocks |
| Pasture | Inside a hedge or wall and grazed short all year |
Pasture also covers each village’s commons, with pollards standing over it. See Harvest.
